This interactive storytelling technique allows children of all ages to bring the story of Twelfth Night to life, without any prior knowledge of the plot. Through this activity, students will become all of the characters, objects, places, and events in Twelfth Night, and everyone will get the chance to try several roles. They will play everything from Viola to the storm that washes the twins ashore, to the box-tree!
Angelique Archer, a teaching artist and actor at the ASC, will facilitate the shared storytelling, bringing individuals, groups, and sometimes the whole class, in and out of the action. Under her guidance, students can physically explore the characters, the language, and the world of Illyria. The Whoosh technique was originally devised by Dr Joe Winston of the University of Warwick and has been used regularly by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare’s Globe.
Through this 45-minute workshop, children will gain a better understanding and ownership of Twelfth Night and Shakespeare’s text, and leave with the mindset that Shakespeare is FUN and FOR ALL.
