Show Directors are responsible for one of three plays produced each session. In addition to usual directorial duties, show directors should be professional role models and comfortable in a mentorship position.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Candidates must be 21 or older
- A minimum BA or BFA (or equivalent professional directing and teaching experience)
- All final-round candidates will be required to undergo a standard background check before being offered a contract. Employment offers are contingent on satisfactory results.
- Experience working with both Shakespeare’s staging conditions and the ASCTC demographic of young actors is strongly preferred.
- Show Directors are also invited to teach workshops, give lectures, and help with monologue coaching – applicants who are able and willing to do so are greatly preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES
BEFORE CAMP
- Cut the base text provided by the Camp Director to a 60-minute performance length (~1000-1200 lines of verse)
- All cuts are subject to approval by the Camp Director.
- First cuts are due April 1.
- Create several potential doubling charts using different cast sizes in order to ensure flexibility in the casting sessions.
- Begin production meeting conversations with artistic team (RDAs and production interns) during the Spring
- Present any design-related requests (including use of the trap door) to Camp Director by Orientation
DURING CAMP
- Manage your artistic team of two RDAs and two production interns over the three-week rehearsal period.
- Be prepared to foster and encourage the artistic growth of your team members.
- Delegate daily directorial duties (e.g. blocking, one-on-one text work) to your RDAs
- Delegate daily production duties (e.g. pulling/organizing props and costumes, taking blocking notes, keeping time) to your production intern
- Be prepared to foster and encourage the artistic growth of your team members.
- Work with campers in the rehearsal room for a minimum of 3 hours daily, 6 days per week, for 3 weeks.
- Teach workshops and give lectures as qualified
- Help with monologue coaching as needed
- Attend unified auditions
- Participate in the session-wide casting session

Session 1: June 12 – July 6, 2020 (Session starts June 15; Final Performance Festival is on July 5)
Session 2: July 10 – August 3, 2020 (Session starts July 12; Final Performance Festival is on August 2)
COMPENSATION

ASC Theatre Camp Residential & Directing Assistants (RDAs) are more than just camp counselors: they are teachers, directors, supervisors, cheerleaders, role models, friends, and fellow students. RDAs are the captains of dorm life, the assistant directors for the mainstage shows, and the directors for the mid session Showcase.
The RDAs are a united team, and each member of the team has a specific role to play in both their capacities as a residential assistant — as a Team Captain (or “head” RDA), a Wellness Leader, or a Social Leader — and as an assistant director for one of the shows in each session. Applicants for ASCTC 2020 must indicate which role they would like to be considered for when applying by selecting which show they would like to work on and which residential role they would like to play. Show titles for both sessions and descriptions of the different residential leadership roles can be found below.
All RDAs receive a private room with an ensuite bathroom, plus all meals. RDAs receive one day off per session and must stay through the final strike at the end of the summer.
All RDA positions for ASCTC 2020 are for both sessions. Applicants may also apply to work during the Extended Experience Week (XXW) between sessions rather than take the week off.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 21 years of age and have completed at least one year of college
- Candidates with a completed BA/BFA in a related field are preferred
- All final-round candidates will be required to undergo a standard background check before being offered a contract. Employment offers are contingent on satisfactory results.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record
- Experience performing, directing, and/or teaching Shakespeare (specifically) as well as a rich, diverse background in theatre arts (generally)
- Exhibits dependability, punctuality, patience, teamwork, self-control, and enthusiasm
- Possesses good leadership skills and responsibility
- Demonstrates appropriate behavior at all times
RESPONSIBILITIES
SERVE AS A RESIDENT ASSISTANT FOR ALL CAMPERS
- Supervise campers throughout the duration of their stay
- Escort campers to and from rehearsals, meals, and activities
- Serve as positive role models for healthy behavior
- Work amicably and cooperatively with all staff members
- Observe and promote all rules and regulations of ASC Theatre Camp
- Fulfill all requirements of assigned Residential Role (Team Captain, Wellness Leader, or Social Leader; described below)
TEAM CAPTAINS
“Head” RDAs; in charge of coordinating residential staff meetings and schedules as well as camper dorm life.
Staff coordination (in collaboration with Camp Director and Camp Life Coordinator)
- Lead nightly meetings for residential staff
- Schedule days off for staff members
- Ensure adequate and equitable staff presence at all camp events
- Serve as liaison between residential and administrative staff
- Manage morning wake-up and evening lights-out in rotation with other RDAs
Camper dorm life
- Keep counts for all meals eaten in Hunt Dining Hall
- Manage camper check-outs
- Assist Camp Life Coordinator with tracking keys for camp vehicles and facilities
- Coordinate off-campus shopping trips
Wellness Leaders
In charge of all camper physical, emotional, and spiritual health and wellbeing needs not requiring the assistance or intervention of trained medical personnel.
Physical
- Assist campers with daily medications as needed and able
- Create and maintain first-aid kits at all camp locations
- Provide transportation to urgent care as needed
- Organize and supervise extracurricular athletic activities for
- campers based on need and interest (e.g. morning runs)
Emotional
- Attend emotional support training during staff orientation
- Provide emotional support for campers as needed
Spiritual
- Assist campers in locating services for worship as needed
- Coordinate transport for campers who wish to attend services
Social Leaders
In charge of coordinating camp life events as well as maintaining camp’s social media presence
Event coordination
- Create and execute themes for camp life events (e.g. Masquerade Ball, talent show)
- Inventory and maintain event supplies (e.g. sunscreen, bug spray, decorations, etc)
- Coordinate prep for camp field trips
Social media
- Post daily on ASCTC social media outlets (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter)
- Write and post daily blog entries about camp life activities on the ASCTC blog
SERVE AS AN ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR Blackfriars PRODUCTIONS
As member of the artistic team for one of each session’s mainstage shows, each RDA will:
- Attend production meetings with their artistic teams
- Participate in pre-audition workshops during orientation day
- Prepare text for Tableaustry section of auditions
- Attend auditions and casting sessions
- Attend all daily rehearsals with their cast
- Work individually with campers during rehearsals as needed/assigned by the show’s Director — RDAs may be asked to block scenes, teach/review choreography, work with campers on text analysis, etc.
- Work individually with campers on line memorization, choreography, music, and other production elements outside of rehearsals as needed

SERVE ON TEAM OF DIRECTORS FOR MID-SESSION SHOWCASE
RDAs also have a chance to stretch their wings as solo directors: each RDA will be responsible for directing a section of the mid session Showcase performance.
After the mainstage shows are cast, RDAs will work with the administrative staff to finalize the Showcase script and decide casting based on a) the distribution of parts for the mainstage shows, b) the strengths and interests of the RDAs, and c) the needs, wants, and desires of the campers (as listed on their audition forms).

Get hands-on experience working in the thick of all the nitty-gritty realities of making theatre with an ASC Theatre Camp Production Internship. By the end of the summer, our Production Interns will have hands-on experience in both stage management and production dramaturgy, diving deep into the process of putting up a final theatrical product from start to finish. ASCTC Production Internships are the perfect opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students contemplating a career in behind-the-scenes theatre.
All ASCTC Production Interns receive room & board for the duration of the internship, one half-day off per week, and one full day off per session.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 18 years of age and working towards a the completion of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree

- Exhibits dependability, punctuality, patience, teamwork, self-control, and enthusiasm
- Demonstrates exceptional organization, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Calm under pressure
- A penchant for innovative, outside-of-the-box thinking
- Willingness to experiment with an attitude of “Yes”
- Experience with theatrical costume design, wardrobe maintenance, sewing, and costume care preferred
- Experience with theatrical prop design, construction, and organization preferred
- Stage management experience preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES
BEFORE CAMP
- Work on script formatting with Camp Director (dramaturgs)
- Work on show binder (stage managers) and dramaturgy presentation with Camp Life Coordinator (dramaturgs)
- Begin design conversations by meeting (remotely if necessary) with show directors and RDAs in the weeks and/or months leading up to camp to discuss design ideas and coordinate costume and prop materials and budgets
- Participate in all staff and orientation training in the days leading up to each session
DURING CAMP
- Attend unified auditions and assist artistic team with casting session
- Attend every rehearsal with your cast
- Take pictures and write daily rehearsal recaps to post on the ASCTC blog (dramaturgs)
- Take blocking notes and write and send official daily rehearsal reports (stage managers)
- Coordinate costume and prop check-out, organization, maintenance, cleaning, and strike
Production Interns may also be asked to serve in other capacities throughout the rehearsal process as the demands on the production and the interests/talents of the intern dictate, including but not limited to:
- text coaching
- leading warmups
- Choreography (as qualified)
- Music arrangement and coaching

Location
The ASC Theatre Camp takes place in Staunton, VA. Participants and staff live on campus at Mary Baldwin University, only a few blocks away from the world's only recreation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre (and the camp performance venue) the Blackfriars Playhouse.
