You may think Shakespeare camp is all about rehearsal, verse and rhetoric, and endless textual analysis. All work and no play… WRONG!
The campers were tasked with taking some rest and relaxation at the Gypsy Hill Park and Pool. Spearheaded by our Camp Director Lia Wallace, some campers took the scenic route through downtown. Other campers were escorted by a trusty steed (the camp van). They swam and splashed; they even held diving contests and swimming races. One of my favorite moments was watching many of them shoot out of the slides at unbelievable velocities.
There was, however, more to enjoy than just the pool. Campers explored the splendor of the park; watching the ducks and geese swim in the pond, and taking in the nature on the long track through the park. One camper even rode the mini-train, which was added as a park feature in 1958 and recently restored. If you’ve got the time, I highly recommend digging into the long and interesting history of Staunton’s most popular park; it’s a rabbit hole I dive into time and time again.
The upcoming week is filled with many rehearsals and even more exciting activities. I’m grateful we had a bit of time to rest and have fun before getting back to work.
