Show Title: Twelfth Night

Director: Hailey Pearce

Staff Crew: Brooke Crittenden and Joe Marsh (RDAs), Natalie Watson and Zoe Symons (Interns)

Today was a special day for the cast of Twelfth Night, as ASC actor Hannah Nguyen was with us in rehearsal for an hour to do character work with some campers and find the physicality of the Twelfth Night characters. She especially worked on foolery and learning what goes into being a fool with Marcy Girard, who plays Feste, the fool. While some actors worked with Hannah, and others worked on learning their lines, Hailey worked on blocking Act 3, Scenes 1 and 2. Both scenes featured some exceptionally notable work from our clowns, Sir Andrew, Sir Toby, and Fabian, played by Maggie Park, Jude Yaktin, and Linus Ramakrishnan respectively.

Quick and Quotable:

  • From the play:
    • “You are now sailed into the north of my lady’s opinion, unless you do redeem it, by some laudable attempt, either of valour or policy.”
    • “And’t be any way, it must be with valour, for policy I hate.” – Fabian and Sir Andrew, discussing Andrew’s (nonexistant) chances with Olivia
  •
  • From the director:
    • You’re an orphan! We’ll get you a little dog, suddenly this turns into Annie. – Hailey, on Viola
    • By the power of everything Shakespeare! – Hailey
  •
  • From the cast
    • Diva down! Diva down! – Maggie, on Sir Andrew’s breakdown

Production Insights:

The play is looking amazing and it was such an honor to see Hannah’s work with the campers and to watch them learn from her. Clowning around was the theme of the day, and as it is a comedy, the clowning elements are extremely important in order for the play to truly fulfill its comedic potential. Besides, it’s fun to clown and be a fool! The blocking is going wonderfully, and the intention that these campers are putting into their characters and character work is delightful to see. Much fun and clowning around was had by all, especially in Act 3, Scene 2, and being able to have fun in rehearsal is, in my opinion, what rehearsing for a comedic play is all about! It was really nice to see the energy in the room, and see how much intention the campers put into each of the roles they play.
