Today’s Date: 7/3

Show Title: Twelfth Night

Director: Hailey Pearce

Staff Crew: Brooke Crittenden and Joe Marsh (RDAs), Natalie Watson and Zoe Symons (Interns)

What we did:

First, Joe led a game of Czechoslovakia for our warm-up. Then, we got to blocking Act 4, which includes many funny and fun scenes, as this is the act in which Sebastian enters Illyria for the first time, and of course, everybody confuses him for Cesario, who is actually his half-identical twin sister Viola in disguise. Hilarity ensues, of course. We were also visited by Angela Iannone and Nick Ericksen from the ASC’s summer repertory company for this rehearsal, and they observed the actors at work throughout. Finally, we did a complete run through of all the acts we’d blocked so far.

Quick and Quotable:

  • From the play (something that stood out to you particularly today)
      • Are all the people mad? – Sebastian, entering Illyria
  • From the director (can be poignant, funny, or anything in between — can also be more than one, but keep it to three or fewer)
      • He can still hear you, and he’s a ruffian – Hailey, on Sebastian and Olivia
      • It’s your love me, choose me moment – Hailey
      • Let’s not talk about the president – Hailey
  • From the cast (same as above)
    • Who the hell is Cesario? Cause it ain’t me, brother – Sebastian, probably (said by Wren)
    • Pick me, choose me, love me – Whole cast

Production Insights:

Running through Acts 1-4 was so much fun, and witnessing an almost complete run-through of the play showed me how amazing it looks. Act 4 is definitely a turning point in this play, and it was so much fun to work through scenes such as Sebastian’s confrontation with a few of the people of Illyria, Malvolio’s prison scene, and Olivia’s (really hasty) wedding. Sebastian briefly takes center stage in Act 4, after having gotten to know Viola throughout, and we see madness and confusion displayed through both him and Malvolio in this act. Watching the campers’ interpretations of their characters and seeing them working so hard on memorizing this play filled me with pride for them and made me super excited for what is to come (I know, I know, I say this a lot, but I am really really excited for the show!)
